Case Study

Oral Assist

Solving real problems to help shape the leaders of the future. Horace Mann once called education the “great equalizer”. We’re proud to have been a part of a product focused on making education more accessible for all types of students.

Challenge

From the OralAssist team themselves: Providing oral accommodations to a large group in general education classrooms can be challenging! For one, small classroom environments can make it difficult to reduce the distraction to others testing as the teacher reads aloud. Additionally, every student has different pacing and different needs with regard to how their test is read. Students also struggle with asking for oral accommodation due to a multitude of factors.

The OralAssist team wanted, with the use of the app, the ability for teachers to be able to more effectively assist and monitor the whole class during testing and assignments rather than being planted in one place reading to those who benefit from oral accommodations.

Solution Provided

Simublade developed a comprehensive solution allowing educators to scan in (via camera) or upload assignments, annotate them via intuitive controls, and assign them to students.

iPad Development

Document Upload

We wanted educators to have the least hurdles to uploading assignments. In order to do so, we incorporated document scanning to allow teachers to use their device camera to upload assignments. In addition, we allowed direct upload from their camera roll, iCloud or Google Drive.

Document Annotation

Educators asked for an intuitive way to record prompts and annotate documents, and we delivered just that. We developed a simple interface to draw annotations and record voice snippets to provide intuitive oral assistance in a scalable fashion.

Unique Asks

From the OralAssist team themselves: Providing oral accommodations to a large group in general education classrooms can be challenging! For one, small classroom environments can make it difficult to reduce the distraction to others testing as the teacher reads aloud. Additionally, every student has different pacing and different needs with regard to how their test is read. Students also struggle with asking for oral accommodation due to a multitude of factors.

Accessible Design

We designed an application that was accessible, bold and intuitive, without focusing on one age group too much. The result was a UI centered around intuitive and clean elements with natural progressions. The goal was to require no training to navigate the application.

1-2-3 Login

To provide easy access to files without credentials, we created a combination style system where teachers would pick a color, animal, and shortcode which could be input sequentially by their students in order to retrieve the files. Simple, fun and effective.

Final Result

"The application has delivered significant benefits to the population it was targeting and received academic recognition around the world for its innovation in the special-needs space. Simublade was invested in the project, going above and beyond to ensure they delivered on time and within budget.” - OralAssist via Clutch
