The differences between platforms for development

Different platforms have very different coding aspects to them, which affects the cost and flexibility. Depending on the type of project, your budget, and your target audience, you may want to choose one platform over another. Here is some information to help you out, of course we're always willing to talk and figure out what is best for you. If you decide to choose multiple options, we heavily discount the second option you choose, no matter when you choose it.

iOS

Typically, iOS offers more user loyalty and revenue. However, this can make it difficult to get a good start; but once it becomes popular, it will grow exponentially. Also Apple is very popular in North America, Australia, and Europe. So, if that is where you target your app, there are lots of iOS devices in these parts of the world compared to others. iOS applications are typically easier to make than Android applications, however run a slightly bigger cost for publication. iOS apps can be run on iPhones, iPads and iPods, but cannot run on Android devices.

If your app relies on early revenue or targets one of the countries listed above, iOS is a safe first choice. There are fewer apps to compete with and higher chances getting to revenue fast. This can prove to be a key choice especially if your product or startup requires capital to run.

Web

Web Development offers the flexibility of cross platform compatibility, meaning you don't have to have an app for each platform! No matter what device your customers are using, a web app will adapt and be viewable on their browser. Web apps are typically hard to be for profit, and may be better for a subscription or login model. Web Apps are cheaper to develop than either Android or iOS. They are good for instant adoption, and require minimal additional fees as there is no publishing onto an app store. Web Applications use HTML5 to be developed.

Web Apps typically are a bit less feature intensive, and are more generic as they need to be cross platform compatible. If you want a nice app for your clients to get information on you or make an appointment, this may be the best bet for your wallet.

Android

The biggest advantage to Android is that it is huge. Currently there are just below 1 billion android users, with 1 million activations each day. While iOS leads in terms of revenues, the average Android revenue is growing fast and so the future is bright if you play for the long term. Additionally, it can be easier to get your app seen and downloaded initially than iOS. Android has less restrictions for development, although developing typically takes longer. Android apps only run on Android phones, which are far more plentiful. Android apps are built using Java.

Along with market size and positive revenue growth, publishing your app on Google Play is incredibly easy and inexpensive. Google Play also provides a robust search capability, making it easier for users to discover your app.

Hybrid

Hybrid apps are built on a cross-platform and can be used on both iOS and Android. These apps typically have less customization, but offer the flexibility of platform of a web app, with the strength of using the App Stores of different platforms. Building one hybrid app is cheaper than building two individual apps for iOS and Android, however  the quality and user friendliness of these apps becomes harder as the app becomes more complex. We recommend hybrid apps for simpler apps as a cost effective option for getting on both platforms. If your app is more complex, we recommend choosing one platform first, and then waiting and building the next for a reduced price.

Desktop

Desktop applications are typically for proprietary uses, meaning for heavy lifting for a specific use we would recommend a desktop app. Most development these days can be done using a back end server and a web front-end. This gives ease of use and flexibility across any platform, using the power of the cloud. We can figure out what the perfect solution is for you.
